Anorexia in Teens Anorexia in teens is an eating disorder, a disease that shows itself regardless of race, religion, social status, or age. It is more prevalent in teenage girls than it is in boys and it is manifested in the way that a child looks at themselves. A young girl with anorexia believes, above all things that they are overweight. It doesn’t matter if their bones show through their skin; looking in the mirror they still see what they feel is an ugly picture of them. Anorexic teens will either eat very little food, possibly counting all of the calories or select food with very low fat content. Starving their bodies for the nutrition it needs, anorexics tend to not only look very unhealthy, but have low energy, sleep a great deal of time, become moody and very quick to anger. The lack of nutrition in their system will start a spiraling effect with their health. A body cannot survive if it does not get the proper amount of fuel it needs to sustain it. Therefore, anorexics tend to look extremely thin and ill when the disease has been present for a great deal of time. In order to begin treatment for a teen with anorexia the child must first try to allow their body to intake food and the appropriate food. Anorexic’s starve their bodies for food, which after a period of time, may make it intolerable to the body for anything to be digested. An anorexic must first get back to a tolerable weight before any other type of healing can happen. Some of the problems that anorexic’s tend to face are: Stomach problems , heart problems, irregular periods or no periods in girls, fine hair all over the body, including the face and dry, scaly skin. |
